The Challenge

A site running on diesel.
Around the clock.

Pennington Haulage operates a 24/7 logistics facility in Northwest England with no grid connection. Prior to this installation, the entire site — from office and workshop equipment through to security systems and overnight operations — was powered solely by a diesel generator running continuously, 365 days a year.

The operational costs were substantial, the carbon footprint significant, and the business fully exposed to volatile fuel prices with no viable route to energy independence. A transformational solution was required.

The Solution

An integrated energy system.
Engineered for off-grid excellence.

Dropbox GES, in partnership with TLEK Electrical Services Ltd, designed and delivered a complete off-grid renewable energy solution tailored precisely to the operational demands of the site. No grid connection required. No compromise on reliability.

Component 01
Solar PV Array
30kW

High-efficiency rooftop solar installation generating approximately 25,500 kWh annually. Designed to fully charge the BESS on an average summer day and deliver meaningful daytime load coverage across all seasons. Summer generation significantly exceeds site demand, creating a daily surplus.

Component 02
SMARTESS Battery System
100kWh

The SMARTESS-30-60kW/100kWh lithium energy storage system stores solar generation throughout the day, delivering reliable power through the evening and overnight periods. The BESS covers the full overnight site load within its 80% depth-of-discharge operating window without grid dependency.

Component 03
Power Inverter
50kW

A 50kW inverter manages intelligent conversion between DC stored energy and AC site power, rated to handle the full peak site demand of 10kW with substantial headroom. Ensures seamless, uninterrupted power delivery under all load conditions including simultaneous workshop and office operation.

Design & Installation: TLEK Electrical Services Ltd — The full electrical design, system engineering, and physical installation of this project was led and executed by TLEK. All works are compliant with BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, commissioned and signed off on site by a qualified engineer.

Energy Intelligence

The daily power profile.

The system operates across two distinct seasonal modes. Summer delivers genuine solar surplus, fully charging the BESS and exceeding site demand. In winter, an intelligent protocol deploys the diesel generator as a last-resort safety net — activating only when battery state of charge falls below 20%, charging back to 40%, then shutting down.

Measured Impact

The numbers speak
for themselves.

From day one of operation, the transformation in energy costs, carbon output, and operational resilience has been measurable, sustained, and significant.

Annual Financial Saving
£39,800
Combined fuel and maintenance savings versus continuous diesel operation. Estimated simple payback on total system investment of 3–4 years.
Annual CO₂ Reduction

Equivalent to removing 15 diesel vehicles from the road permanently, or the carbon sequestration of approximately 2,900 mature trees.
Diesel Displaced
25,580 L/yr
From ~26,000 litres consumed annually to ~420 litres — a 98.4% reduction in fossil fuel use achieved within the first year of full operation.
Generator Hours Saved
8,620 hrs/yr
Engine runtime reduced from 8,760 to ~140 hours per year. Dramatically extended asset lifespan with near-elimination of routine maintenance overhead.

Phase 2 Opportunity

Zero diesel.
Total energy independence.

The current system has already eliminated over 98% of diesel consumption. A modest second-phase investment in additional solar PV capacity would eradicate diesel dependency entirely — delivering true zero-emission, off-grid energy independence year-round, with existing BESS and inverter infrastructure already in place.

  • Add ~15kW additional rooftop PV to bridge the winter solar deficit
  • Existing BESS and 50kW inverter fully support the expanded system — no additional infrastructure required
  • Diesel generator retained as emergency standby only — full operational resilience maintained
  • Summer surplus unlocks potential for EV fleet charging at zero fuel cost
  • Full green credentials — scope 1 and 2 emissions from energy effectively eliminated
